description

The Quebec Ferry Authority (La société des traversiers du Québec) is responsible for almost all the ferries operated throughout the huge territory of the Province of Quebec. Operating a wide variety of ferries large and small the authority is a very large user of hot-dip galvanizing for good reason.

It was clear to the Authority that no other corrosion solution compared to the long life, robust durability and exceptional value of hot-dip galvanized steel.

Along with smaller fresh water rivers the authority also operates large scale operations on the mighty Saint River and the salt water Gulf of Saint Lawrence.  This particular ferry route crosses the salt water mouth of Saguenay river as it flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.  It is at the midpoint of the 800 mile Highway 138 which is the sole road connecting the entire North Shore of the River and Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

This region of Quebec is undergoing major upgrades to its infrastructure to support important resource mega-projects in the North of Quebec.  The Ferry Authority is doing its part by expanding and updating the capacity of the crossings in the region.  This harsh moist salt laden marine environment is made all the more challenging with heavy applications of road de-icing chemicals and the widespread use of metal tire studs on all classes of vehicles.

Common sense and previous experience made it clear to the Authority that no other corrosion solution compared to the long life, robust durability and exceptional value of hot-dip galvanized steel.

These new ferry loading structures operate 24 hours - 365 days a year in all extremes of weather saving motorists a detour of over 120 miles.  For this reason over 1,200,000 cars and trucks along with many more passengers use this ferry each year.
