ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER SPIRE

Overview

Reasons for Galvanizing: Aesthetics, Coating Durability, Corrosion Performance, Initial Cost, Life-Cycle Cost, Prior HDG Experience, Quality of HDG, Sustainability

Components Galvanized: The entire steel component of the Spire structure was hot-dip galvanized along with related components.

At 1,776 feet, One World Trade Center is among the tallest buildings in the world.  1,776 feet straight up is also a less than ideal location for corrosion maintenance!  Therefore, low cost, long-life hot-dip galvanizing was specified for the spire of One World Trade Center.

description

One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower)is the primary building of the new World Trade Center complex in New York City's Lower Manhattan and is the tallest building in the United States and Western Hemisphere. The 104-story super tall skyscraper stands on the northwest corner of the16-acre (6.5 ha) World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center.

At 1,776 feet, One World Trade Center is among the tallest buildings in the world.  1,776 feet straight up is also a less than ideal location for corrosion maintenance!  Therefore, low cost, long-life hot-dip galvanizing was specified for the spire of One World Trade Center.

The tower's steel structure topped out on August 30, 2012. On May 10, 2013, the final component of the skyscraper's spire was installed, making One World Trade Center the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the fourth-tallest skyscraper inthe world by pinnacle height. Its spire reaches asymbolic height of 1,776 feet (541 m) in reference to the year of the United States Declaration ofIndependence. The tower’s 133-meter (440foot) tall spire (formely known as the antenna), which include both its baseand mast. The bottom section of the spire has an 18-meter or 5.5-foot diameter, its heaviest section weights over 54 tons and the top of the spire is instainless steel.

Because of itssize and dimension, the spire in 18 sections and travelled by barge from Montreal to New York passing through the St.Lawrence Seaway. Topping the OneWorld Trade Center tower, the spire brought the height of the tower to asymbolic 1 776 feet high (541 meters) as it marks the year America signed its declaration of independence.
