description

Lansdowne Park situated in the center of Canada's capital, Ottawa has a long history as the premiere sports venue in the city.  When a large section of the original open air stadium was condemned due to corrosion related structural failures a process was put in place to redevelop the park.

The winning proposal include a new stadium as well as commercial development of surrounding areas.  The new stadium will continue to host the professional CFL football team as well as a new professional soccer team from the North American Soccer League.

"It's low cost and superior performance as compared to alternatives made for an easy sell."

This stadium design departs from the traditional notion of a stadium as an inert building and instead takes a position that architecture is a temporal and dynamic. This is expressed with a public space that encircles the stadium, providing the public with opportunities to flow through the stadium structure while still being in the park.

The new TD Place stadium relied heavily on hot-dip galvanized steel with almost half of the 2,000 tons of structural steel being galvanized.  This usage is concentrated in areas of public interaction such as railings and visible structures.  The stadium has a strikingly beautiful design and is at the core of a redevelopment plan for the area just steps from the Canadian Parliament buildings and the famous Rideau Canal, best known as the longest skating arena in the world.

Galvanizing was chosen for it's proven performance as seen in many stadiums throughout Ontario and Quebec.  It's low cost and superior performance as compared to alternatives made for an easy sell.
