This research dedicated solar array is the largest of its kind in Canada, commissioned by and built on the campus of the University of Sherbrooke it has an initial capacity of nearly one megawatt. The field consists of 25 motorized sun following platforms and several static roof units. Given the knowledge quest mission of the University these panels have exceptional sensors and other data collection capabilities for cutting edge R&D. Hot-Dip Galvanized steel provides all the structural support for these state-of-the-art panels.

The specific emphasis of this solar park is to improve solar panel performance in cold climates and in high latitudes where lower sun angles are a real challenge to capacity and cost effectiveness. The century-plus long proven performance of hot-dip galvanizing in traditional electrical grids made it a natural for solar arrays and the additional corrosion challenges of northern climes redoubles the value benefit of galvanized steel here. A nice side benefit of this investment for the future is that the array is expected to provide 15-20% of the electrical needs of the entire University campus.

The amazing low-cost and high-performance value equation of HDG saved the University substantial funds over more exotic coating or materials without sacrificing any durability. This economy redirected funds towards the core mission of the project. This is often the case with galvanized steel, providing exceptional value that frees up money for other elements of any project or product.

The research mandate of this solar array is a big plus for the galvanizing industry as this field is already drawing academics. scientists and other experts from around the world to participate in research at this site. These people are often influencers and/or deciders for countless specification decisions on so many major projects around the country. The blend of this new complex technology being supported by the time-proven beautiful simplicity of pure zinc over steel lets researchers concentrate on their work while the structures themselves have “spec it and forget it” proven maintenance-free durability.
